One of the reason I get tattoos is because it is my choice and my body! Your pet is your friend, keep the piercings and tattoos off your pets: You could face jail time if you don't (deservedly so).

Andrew Cuomo on Monday signed a bill into law that will ban tattoos and piercing on pets. The Legislature passed the bill in June that will prohibit animal piercing and tattooing with the exception for medical or identification purposes.

"This is animal abuse, pure and simple. I'm proud to sign this common sense legislation and end these cruel and unacceptable practices in New York once and for all," Cuomo said in a statement.

The law will take effect in 120 days, and it will allow the use of piercing and tattooing in only limited circumstances, such as ear tags on rabbits, tattoos for identification purposes, or where the piercing provides a medical benefit to the animal and is performed by or under the supervision of a licensed veterinarian.

A violator of the law faces up to 15 days in jail and a fine up to $250.

"Animals can't speak out against undergoing a painful procedure like piercing or tattooing," said Sen. Thomas Libous, R-Binghamton, who sponsored the bill. "I'm glad we're standing up for them and banning this heartless practice."

Assemblywoman Linda Rosenthal, D-Manhattan, introduced the bill in July 2011 after she said she heard about a Pennsylvania woman selling "gothic kittens" with piercings on their ears, necks and down their spines. More recently, a Brooklyn tattoo artist drew criticism for putting a tattoo on his pit bull.

"People can choose to tattoo or pierce their own bodies, but their pets do not enjoy that same luxury, Rosenthal said in a statement. "Anyone who would subject an animal to needless pain and suffering to make a fashion statement should be guilty of a crime, and with my law, they will now face stiff penalties."

Hope this becomes common law around the world. Sorry to share this picture it makes me feel a little sick but we have to spread the word. #nopettattoos
